Brush Clearance & Mowing in San Francisco Peninsula

At Precision Tree Care, we offer professional brush clearance and mowing services as part of our comprehensive approach to tree and landscape health. These services are essential for maintaining a well-kept, hazard-free environment – especially in areas prone to wildfires or overgrowth.

Brush clearing involves the removal of unwanted vegetation such as brush, dense shrubs, overgrown weeds, and small trees. This service is ideal for improving the appearance of your property, preparing land for construction or landscaping, and significantly reducing fire hazards – a crucial factor across San Francisco Peninsula, hillside communities, and the wildland-urban interface zones throughout San Mateo counties.

Mowing refers to the targeted cutting of grass and low-lying vegetation to maintain a clean, well-groomed landscape. Regular mowing not only improves curb appeal but also helps to control pests and rodents, minimize weed growth, and keep your outdoor space healthy and inviting.

At Precision Tree Care, we understand that proper vegetation management is more than just maintenance – it’s a key part of protecting your property and ensuring the long-term health of your trees and landscape. Our trained crews use industry-standard equipment and techniques to safely and efficiently clear overgrown areas.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is “defensible space” and how much do I need?2026-07-21T19:23:52+00:00

Defensible space is the buffer zone between your property and surrounding vegetation that slows the spread of wildfire. California guidelines recommend clearing flammable material within 30 to 100 feet of structures, depending on your location and local regulations. Zone 1 (0 to 30 feet) requires keeping the area clear of dead vegetation and pruning low branches to 6 to 10 feet above grade. Zone 2 (30 to 100 feet) requires thinning and spacing vegetation to interrupt fire’s horizontal and vertical path. Slope increases requirements – steeper terrain needs additional clearance.

New this cycle: California is phasing in an ember-resistant zone – Zone 0, the first 5 feet from the structure – for high-hazard areas, which means no combustible mulch, woodpiles, or vegetation against the walls. Starting the habit now puts you ahead of enforcement.

Do you work on both large rural and small residential properties?2026-07-21T19:23:51+00:00

Absolutely. We handle everything from small residential yards to large lots, HOA common areas, commercial properties, and working ranches and farm parcels around Pescadero and La Honda – tailoring equipment, crew size, and approach to the property. A quarter-acre lot in Belmont and a multi-acre hillside parcel are both jobs we handle regularly.

The equipment scales with the parcel: hand crews and compact machines for town lots, skid steers and mastication equipment for acreage. What does not change with size is the standard – written scope, licensed crew, complete cleanup – whether the job is one afternoon or one week.

What is brush clearance and why is it necessary?2026-07-21T19:23:52+00:00

Brush clearance removes dry grass, weeds, and overgrown vegetation that can fuel wildfires. It creates defensible space around your home or business – improving safety and, in many parts of San Mateo County, satisfying a legal requirement enforced by local fire districts. Properties in Pacifica, La Honda, Half Moon Bay, and hillside areas of Hillsborough face annual inspection and compliance deadlines.

The two zones to memorize: the first 30 feet from the structure should be lean, clean, and green – no dead material, no ladder fuels – and from 30 to 100 feet the goal is spacing and reduced fuel, not bare ground. Meeting those two standards is most of compliance.

What happens to the wood and debris after removal?2026-07-21T19:23:51+00:00

We handle it completely. Branches get chipped on-site, and wood can be cut into sections for firewood at your request – or everything goes to disposal, your choice. The site is raked and cleaned before we leave. The same applies to brush clearance and lot clearing – all cleared material is chipped and hauled away. Stump grinding is available as an add-on, leaving your property fully cleared and ready for new landscaping, hardscape, or replanting.

If you want to keep the wood: tell us at the estimate and we buck the trunk into rounds at no charge – green rounds split easiest within a few weeks, and most species need 6 to 12 months of seasoning before burning. Otherwise everything is gone the same day, chips included.

Will a skid steer or brush clearing equipment damage my yard?2026-07-21T18:18:25+00:00

Our experienced operators select the right attachment and technique to minimize ground disturbance while working efficiently. Skid steers are significantly lighter than full-size excavators, and their weight is distributed across rubber tracks or tires, reducing soil compaction. In sensitive areas near ornamental planting, irrigation systems, or hardscape, we take additional precautions and can lay protective matting where needed. We walk every property before operating to identify utilities, irrigation lines, and anything requiring extra care.

What we do on delicate ground as standard practice: protection mats over lawns and paver paths, plywood at gate pinch points, and a walk-through with you afterward. If turf is bruised despite that, topdressing and seed fix it within weeks – and we tell you that up front, not after.

Do you provide documentation for fire department inspections?2026-07-21T17:54:51+00:00

Yes. If your property is subject to fire department inspection, or your insurer requires proof of compliant defensible space, we provide documentation of the work performed – including photos, a description of what was cleared, the zones addressed, and the date of service. This is particularly useful for properties in Pacifica, La Honda, Half Moon Bay, and Hillsborough that receive annual compliance notices.

Timing matters on the Coastside: inspection season peaks in late spring and early summer, and calendars fill. Booking clearance work in late winter means the documentation is ready before the notice arrives, not after.

How much does it cost to clear an acre of land?2026-07-21T19:23:51+00:00

Honest answer: a per-acre rate quoted sight-unseen is usually wrong, because the price is driven by what is on the acre:

  • Brush and light vegetation: the affordable end – our masticator processes it in place quickly
  • Mixed brush with small trees: mid-range – mastication plus selective cutting
  • Mature trees: priced per tree on top of the clearing – a wooded acre is a different project entirely
  • Slope and access: steep or equipment-inaccessible ground adds hand-crew time
  • Disposal: chips can often stay on site as erosion control; hauling everything away costs more

For defensible space work, partial clearing (understory and ladder fuels, keeping the healthy canopy) often achieves the fire-safety goal at a fraction of full-clear cost. We walk the parcel and give a firm written estimate – free, with dump and haul included where material leaves the site.

Which parts of San Mateo County are in fire hazard zones?2026-07-21T19:23:52+00:00

On the 2025 CAL FIRE maps, hazard zones concentrate along the Peninsula’s hillsides: in Pacifica – homes backing onto Sweeney Ridge, the slopes above Linda Mar and Park Pacifica, and the Vallemar and Rockaway canyon edges; in Belmont – the canyon neighborhoods around Waterdog Lake; in San Carlos – Crestview and the western canyon streets; in San Bruno – the slopes toward Sweeney Ridge and Junipero Serra County Park; in Hillsborough – hundreds of acres toward I-280 and the Crystal Springs watershed; plus large parts of La Honda, Pescadero, Emerald Hills in Redwood City, and the wooded coastside.

If your lot is in one of these zones, the priorities are concrete:

  • Defensible space in the first 30 feet – dead material out, ladder fuels broken up
  • Eucalyptus and conifer limbs and bark litter managed near structures
  • Documentation – increasingly what insurers ask for at renewal

We do this work all season, with our own skid steer and mastication equipment for the bigger slopes.

This is my third time reviewing this company. Once again, I cannot say enough good things about the Company, but Ryan who came out and did the estimate, but the crew and their professionalism. When they left the backyard was actually cleaner than when they got here. These are the reasons I will continue to use them and highly recommend them to anyone who needs tree work if it is for just tightening up or extensive work. They are pros.

We hired Precision Tree Care to deal with several massive trees that were constantly raining leaves onto both our roof and our neighbors'--which meant nonstop gutter clogging and growing concerns about insects. It had become a real maintenance headache. On top of that, a bunch of small trees had started sprouting everywhere from the seeds constantly dropping from these larger trees. The arborists from Precision Tree Care took care of all of it, pruning everything cleanly and restoring order to the space. Their team came in and absolutely saved the day. They cleared things out thoughtfully and professionally, and the difference is huge--our backyard now gets much more natural light, and we're no longer dealing with constant debris buildup in the gutters. The whole process was smooth, and the results exceeded our expectations. Really appreciate the work--thank you, Precision Tree Care!

Ryan and the Precision Tree Care team did a fantastic job pruning all four of my palm trees. From the start, Ryan took the time to walk me through the different service options and explain what each one actually meant. I didn't know much about palm pruning going in, and he was genuinely patient and thorough in helping me understand what my trees needed. The estimate was professional and straightforward, and he provided several options for me to consider. On the day of the job, Ryan and the crew showed up on time, worked efficiently, and wrapped everything up faster than I expected. Smooth from start to finish. Highly recommend.

Quote for small job which required coordination with our neighbors to either get on their property or trim their tree that was encroaching on structures on our property. Ryan put us at ease from the start treating us with respect and addressing all our questions with direct and knowledgeable answers. Overall a very professional, direct, respectful and trustworthy business owner with a skillful and quick crew. He came on the day of work as well to check that everything was done according to our agreement. Did not expect that on such a small job. Thank you, we will be repeat customers! Hope this review helps you get more business!

Just had Precision out to care for and trim a few heritage live oaks, one that was on the sick side. They did a fantastic job. The team are like artists, and the resulting canopy looks beautiful and also balances a tree that needed some care. The team was also very responsive, and great to work with on the site.

Although I decided to use a different tree service company because that company was able to work on replacing our existing irrigation, I have no doubt that Precision Tree Care would have done a thorough job. I met with Ryan, their arborist, and he was extremely knowledgeable and helpful. Ryan offered some unsolicited advice that I could do on my own to care for my plants and I really appreciated them. He also offered a very competitive estimate. I will definitely keep Precision Tree Care in mind for future tree work.

They were prompt in replying, and the quoting process. Worked with us to update the quote quickly and find a date that worked for us. We had some time restrictions given the school traffic on our street. The team came earlier and finished the job very quickly and efficiently. They trimmed the trees to our satisfaction, would definitely use them again. Their quoted price was also ~30% less then another quote I got from another company.

Trust me on this, use this fine company for your tree needs.Ryan ,the owner is an arborist who definitely knows how trees grow, fail etc etc. His stellar crew just took some huge limbs off a very large willow at my home today.Crew so incredibly skilled with safety a clear priority. Tree looks so much better and is safer as if a limb fell ,it could cause great harm . They took extra care not to step on or drop anything in newly refreshed flower beds which pleased me also. Thank you Ryan and also Leo and his team.

Exceptional people, fabulous results! The team arrived an hour early (in whose universe does that happen?) and talked with me about the job and my expectations. Highly recommend Ryan and his crew of workers at Precision Tree Care. They just finished trimming three trees for us and we are very pleased with the job. The crew arrived early but did not start working until 8 am so they would not disturb the neighbors. Worked quickly and efficiently and had us approve the final trimming and clean-up before they left. Will definitely use Precision when our trees need to be trimmed again.

Outstanding company ! From start to finish. Starting with our estimate, it was very thorough and for the extensive work to be done surprisingly affordable. We have several very large oak trees in our backyard growing on a steep hill, with the rains last year and the expected rains this year we needed to trim the trees back. Once we signed the proposal we were given a start date. The owner and the foreman came out the day before to go over the job , figuring what needed to be cut and how so the trees look natural while asking for our input and to explain what will happen the next day. The next morning the crew came out and quickly went to work, trimming back all the overgrown trees but keeping in tact the natural shape and future growth in mind. Once the job was done our yard was cleaned immaculately!!

We have a number of large cypress trees in our yard that needed care. After soliciting quotes from four competitors, we settled on Precision Tree Care for trimming of four trees and removal of two. They were neither the most nor least expensive, but throughout the quote process Ryan and Patti provided the most professional service of the companies we contacted. That efficiency and professionalism extended into scheduling and executing the job. Ryan, Patti and the crew completed the work very much to our satisfaction. A wonderful experience! They should be at the top of everyone's list for best tree care service in town!

Why Brush Clearance Requires a Professional Crew

Brush clearing looks simple – but done incorrectly, it can create new problems. Cutting at the wrong height leaves stubs that re-sprout aggressively. Removing the wrong species can destabilize slopes and increase erosion risk. Leaving cut material on-site creates slash piles that become next season’s fuel. And in San Francisco Peninsula – working near fences, utilities, and neighboring properties requires care and experience.

At Precision Tree Care Inc., every brush clearance job is assessed by our ISA Certified Arborist before work begins. We identify what needs to go, what needs to stay, and the safest way to clear your specific site.

  • ISA Certified Arborist on every job (#WE-12520A) – we assess your vegetation profile and fire risk before any cutting begins.
  • Right equipment for every property – from hand tools for small urban yards to brush cutters, chippers, and mowers for large lots and rural parcels.
  • Slope and erosion awareness – we identify areas where over-clearing could cause runoff or instability, common on Peninsula hillsides and canyon-edge properties.
  • Invasive species expertise – we correctly identify and remove high-risk invasives like blackberry, pampas grass, and Scotch broom that fuel fires and crowd out native vegetation.
  • Full debris removal included – all cut material hauled off-site. No slash piles left to dry out and become next season’s fire hazard.
  • Transparent pricing – written estimate before work begins. No surprise charges for access, debris hauling, or disposal.

Brush Clearing Services Across San Francisco Peninsula

We serve residential and commercial properties across San Francisco Peninsula and San Mateo County – including neighborhoods where steep grades, dense vegetation, and limited access require real experience. Whether you have a small backyard in Belmont or a large undeveloped parcel in La Honda, our crew handles the job safely and efficiently.

Common areas and situations we handle:

  • Large residential lots and estates in Atherton, Hillsborough, and Menlo Park
  • HOA common areas, commercial properties, and vacant lots requiring annual fire code compliance
  • Properties that have received violation notices from local fire departments or insurance carriers

After clearing, we can haul all debris off-site or chip and spread material as mulch on garden beds per your preference. Free wood chips are available upon request.

Lot Clearing and Land Preparation in San Francisco Peninsula

Beyond routine brush maintenance, we offer full lot clearing services for properties preparing for construction, landscaping renovations, or sale. Vacant lots, overgrown parcels, and long-neglected properties across San Francisco Peninsula and San Mateo County often require a complete vegetation reset before any new work can begin.

Our lot clearing service includes removal of all overgrown brush, small trees, stumps, and accumulated debris – leaving the site clean and ready for your contractor, landscaper, or real estate listing. We work on all sizes of property, from compact urban infill lots in dense Peninsula neighborhoods to multi-acre parcels in the hills and along the Peninsula.

If you are selling a property, buying a lot to develop, or preparing land for a major landscape redesign, our team can assess the site and give you an accurate, written estimate before any work begins. Call (650) 355-1277 or request a free estimate online.
