It depends on the species and size, under City Code Chapter 25:
- Protected at 10 inches diameter: the natives – coast live oak, valley oak, coast redwood, madrone, bay laurel, buckeye
- Protected at 24 inches: most other species
- Not protected regardless of size: eucalyptus, Monterey pine, acacia, palms
- Special exception: trees posing a substantial fire hazard may qualify for removal – unusual among Peninsula cities
