Wildfire season in California isn’t just a summer concern anymore it’s a year-round risk, especially when dry fuels and wind events line up. At Precision Tree Care Inc., we help homeowners, businesses, HOAs, and property managers across Pacifica, San Mateo County, and nearby coastal communities reduce wildfire exposure with practical, code-aligned vegetation work designed to protect structures and improve firefighter access.
2026 Focus: Defensible Space and the “Zone 0” Ember-Resistant Area
California law requires 100 feet of defensible space (or to the property line) around structures.
At the same time, fire agencies increasingly emphasize Zone 0 (0 – 5 feet from buildings) because embers often ignite the materials closest to the structure. CAL FIRE highlights Zone 0 as the most critical first step.
In 2026, you’ll also hear more about statewide Zone 0 rulemaking (ember-resistant standards near structures). The Board of Forestry has been developing formal regulations tied to the Zone 0 concept, though statewide implementation timelines have been evolving.
Proactive Fire Mitigation to Protect Your Property
Fire mitigation isn’t only about compliance it’s about lowering the chance your home or business becomes an easy ignition point and helping firefighters defend it more safely.
Our Fire Prevention Solutions Include
-
Strategic Tree Trimming & Canopy Thinning
Remove deadwood, reduce ladder fuels, improve spacing, and limit canopy-to-canopy fire spread. -
Limbing-Up / Clearance Work
Reduce low-hanging branches that can carry fire upward into crowns. -
Vegetation Management & Brush Clearing
Remove flammable brush, invasive growth, and dead plants around structures and along access routes. -
Fuel Reduction & Debris Removal
Reduce combustible material loads (with haul-away/chipping options based on site needs). -
Defensible Space Creation (Zones 1 – 2)
Build and maintain the required buffer out to 100 feet (or property line), adapted for slope/wind exposure. -
Zone 0 Readiness Guidance (0 – 5 feet)
Help identify and remove common ember-ignition risks immediately next to structures (where applicable), aligned with CAL FIRE’s Zone 0 principles.
Why Defensible Space Matters in Pacifica & the Coast
Living near the coast doesn’t eliminate wildfire danger. Wind, cured grasses, and dense ornamental vegetation can still create fast-moving fire conditions. A well-maintained defensible space:
-
reduces fire intensity before it reaches the structure,
-
limits ember ignition opportunities,
-
improves access and operational safety for firefighters.
Serving Homeowners, Landowners & Property Managers
Whether you manage a single-family home, a multi-unit property, or large parcels, Precision Tree Care Inc. can help you:
-
Meet defensible space expectations and local guidance (as applicable)
-
Support insurance conversations by documenting mitigation work (photos/checklists when requested)
-
Improve property resilience using practical, site-specific fuel reduction
California’s “Safer from Wildfires” framework also reinforces a layered approach structure + immediate surroundings + community actions which aligns with how we plan mitigation projects.
Local Expertise, Year-Round Service
We understand the vegetation types and wildfire exposure patterns common across Pacifica, Half Moon Bay, San Bruno, Burlingame, Redwood City, and the wider San Mateo County area. Our team builds mitigation plans that are realistic to maintain not just a one-time cleanup.

The Most Common Mistakes We See
After years of doing fire prevention work across San Mateo County, these are the issues we find on almost every property:
Eucalyptus within 30 feet of a structure
Eucalyptus bark is one of the most flammable natural materials in California. The trees shed it constantly, creating a carpet of fuel around the base. The oils in eucalyptus leaves are volatile — they burn hot and fast. If you have a eucalyptus grove near your house, the leaf litter and bark debris underneath it may be the biggest fire risk on your property, even if the trees themselves are healthy.
Juniper and other “torch” plants against the house
Ornamental junipers, Italian cypress, pampas grass, rosemary, and some other common landscaping plants ignite almost instantly when hit by embers. People plant them against their houses for privacy or aesthetics without realizing they’re essentially placing a fuse next to their wall. Replacing these with fire-resistant alternatives within Zone 0 and Zone 1 is one of the highest-impact changes you can make.
Untreated ladder fuels
A continuous chain of vegetation from ground to canopy — grass to shrub to low branch to crown — lets ground fire reach the treetops. Once fire is in the canopy, it moves fast and generates massive ember showers. Breaking this chain by clearing brush, mowing grass, and limbing up trees is fundamental to defensible space.
Neglected access roads
Many properties in coastal San Mateo County have narrow, overgrown driveways or access roads. Fire trucks need at least 12 feet of clear width and 14 feet of vertical clearance. If a fire engine can’t reach your property — or can’t turn around once it gets there — firefighters may have to skip your house. Clearing vegetation along your driveway isn’t just about aesthetics.
What a Fire Prevention Assessment Looks Like
A proper fire prevention assessment isn’t a sales pitch — it’s a systematic walk-through of your property’s fire exposure. Here’s what we evaluate:
- Zone 0 review. What’s touching or within 5 feet of the structure? Mulch type, plants, stored materials, gutter condition, vent screens, deck condition.
- Zone 1 and 2 evaluation. Fuel density, tree spacing, canopy connectivity, ladder fuel presence, dead vegetation, grass height.
- Species assessment. Which trees and plants on the property are high fire risk? What should be removed, relocated, or replaced?
- Access review. Can a fire engine reach the structure? Is there room to turn around? Are there branches or vegetation blocking the route?
- Prioritized plan. We rank the findings by impact — what to do first, what can wait, and what you can handle yourself vs. what needs professional equipment.
The goal isn’t to clear-cut your property. It’s to make targeted changes that have the biggest effect on survivability while preserving the trees and landscaping you value.
What Homeowners Can Do Themselves
A lot of effective fire prevention work is basic yard maintenance done with intention:
- Clear all dead leaves, needles, and debris from within 5 feet of the house — especially from gutters, decks, and the base of walls.
- Move firewood, propane tanks, and lumber at least 30 feet from structures.
- Replace wood mulch with gravel or stone within Zone 0.
- Mow grass to 4 inches or less throughout Zone 2.
- Remove dead plants and trim back anything touching the house.
- Screen attic vents and eave openings with 1/8-inch metal mesh to block embers.
What Requires Professional Equipment
- Crown thinning and limbing up — reducing canopy density and raising the canopy base to break ladder fuel chains. Requires climbing gear and rigging.
- Large-scale brush clearing — clearing dense vegetation across Zone 2 and beyond. We use skid steers, commercial mowers, and chippers depending on terrain and density.
- Tree removal — taking out high-risk species (dead trees, eucalyptus in Zone 1, dying pines) safely without damaging structures or neighboring trees.
- Steep terrain work — many coastal properties have slopes that require specialized equipment and technique to clear safely.
