Frequently Asked Questions

What is “defensible space” and how much do I need?2026-07-21T19:23:52+00:00

Defensible space is the buffer zone between your property and surrounding vegetation that slows the spread of wildfire. California guidelines recommend clearing flammable material within 30 to 100 feet of structures, depending on your location and local regulations. Zone 1 (0 to 30 feet) requires keeping the area clear of dead vegetation and pruning low branches to 6 to 10 feet above grade. Zone 2 (30 to 100 feet) requires thinning and spacing vegetation to interrupt fire’s horizontal and vertical path. Slope increases requirements – steeper terrain needs additional clearance.

New this cycle: California is phasing in an ember-resistant zone – Zone 0, the first 5 feet from the structure – for high-hazard areas, which means no combustible mulch, woodpiles, or vegetation against the walls. Starting the habit now puts you ahead of enforcement.

What is fire prevention tree care and how often should it be done?2026-07-21T17:45:03+00:00

Fire prevention tree care reduces wildfire risk by removing hazardous vegetation, thinning dense trees, pruning low branches, and creating defensible space – the fire prevention and tree removal work that determines whether a property survives a fire season. In San Mateo County, where neighborhoods in Hillsborough, La Honda, Pacifica, and Half Moon Bay border dry hillsides and wooded canyons, it is not optional.

Most properties need an annual inspection and maintenance visit before peak fire season; high-risk areas with fast-growing vegetation may need more. Fuel reduction is cumulative – a property maintained annually needs progressively less work each year, so the most expensive year is the first.

We serve homes, businesses, HOAs, and large properties. Commercial clients and HOAs often use a maintenance contract that keeps common areas compliant with the fire district’s schedule and delivers the inspection documentation automatically.

What is brush clearance and why is it necessary?2026-07-21T19:23:52+00:00

Brush clearance removes dry grass, weeds, and overgrown vegetation that can fuel wildfires. It creates defensible space around your home or business – improving safety and, in many parts of San Mateo County, satisfying a legal requirement enforced by local fire districts. Properties in Pacifica, La Honda, Half Moon Bay, and hillside areas of Hillsborough face annual inspection and compliance deadlines.

The two zones to memorize: the first 30 feet from the structure should be lean, clean, and green – no dead material, no ladder fuels – and from 30 to 100 feet the goal is spacing and reduced fuel, not bare ground. Meeting those two standards is most of compliance.

What does a fire prevention assessment include?2026-07-16T21:50:36+00:00

Our ISA Certified Arborist will walk your property and evaluate vegetation density and species composition – including high-risk plants like eucalyptus, cypress, and dry chaparral – tree spacing and canopy overlap that could allow fire to ladder from ground level into canopies, dead wood, dry brush, and accumulated leaf litter that acts as fuel, proximity of trees and shrubs to structures and fence lines, and any compliance gaps relative to Cal Fire Zone 1 and Zone 2 requirements.

You leave the assessment with a written priority list ordered by risk-per-dollar – what should happen this season and what can safely wait – so the budget goes to the work that actually changes the outcome.

Are eucalyptus trees dangerous?2026-07-21T17:54:50+00:00

Mature blue gum eucalyptus – the tall species planted across the Peninsula a century ago – earns its reputation from three habits:

  • Sudden limb drop: blue gum sheds large limbs without warning, including on calm summer days
  • Fire load: oily foliage, shedding bark, and deep litter make it one of the highest-fuel trees in California – which is why public agencies here have removed thousands
  • Scale: at 100 to 150 feet with shallow anchorage on some soils, failures are consequential

Several local cities specifically exclude eucalyptus from their tree protection ordinances – removing one is often easier legally than removing an oak half its size. Not every eucalyptus needs to come down: weight reduction and crown maintenance manage many of them safely, but a mature blue gum within falling distance of a house deserves a professional risk assessment. We do both the assessment and the work, with our own 75 foot lifts and technical climbers.

The fire risk extends to Monterey cypress as well – it holds dry inner foliage and dense, resinous wood, and both species shed combustible litter continuously. Keep bark litter raked within 30 feet of structures, remove limbs overhanging roofs, and break up continuous rows or groves so fire cannot run from tree to tree.

Can documented defensible space work affect my property insurance?2026-07-16T21:50:38+00:00

In some cases, yes. California insurers increasingly consider a property’s defensible space condition when setting premiums or making coverage decisions in high-risk areas. Some insurers in San Mateo County have begun requiring defensible space compliance as a condition of continued coverage on hillside properties. We provide documentation of all clearance work completed – species removed, zones addressed, date of service, photos – in exactly the format useful for an insurance review. Call (650) 355-1277 to discuss what we can provide.

Two tips that make the documentation work harder: keep it with your policy records and refresh the photos each season – carriers respond to dated, repeated evidence, not a single cleanup. California’s Safer from Wildfires framework also earns discounts with some insurers for documented mitigation.

How much does it cost to clear an acre of land?2026-07-21T19:23:51+00:00

Honest answer: a per-acre rate quoted sight-unseen is usually wrong, because the price is driven by what is on the acre:

  • Brush and light vegetation: the affordable end – our masticator processes it in place quickly
  • Mixed brush with small trees: mid-range – mastication plus selective cutting
  • Mature trees: priced per tree on top of the clearing – a wooded acre is a different project entirely
  • Slope and access: steep or equipment-inaccessible ground adds hand-crew time
  • Disposal: chips can often stay on site as erosion control; hauling everything away costs more

For defensible space work, partial clearing (understory and ladder fuels, keeping the healthy canopy) often achieves the fire-safety goal at a fraction of full-clear cost. We walk the parcel and give a firm written estimate – free, with dump and haul included where material leaves the site.

Which parts of San Mateo County are in fire hazard zones?2026-07-21T19:23:52+00:00

On the 2025 CAL FIRE maps, hazard zones concentrate along the Peninsula’s hillsides: in Pacifica – homes backing onto Sweeney Ridge, the slopes above Linda Mar and Park Pacifica, and the Vallemar and Rockaway canyon edges; in Belmont – the canyon neighborhoods around Waterdog Lake; in San Carlos – Crestview and the western canyon streets; in San Bruno – the slopes toward Sweeney Ridge and Junipero Serra County Park; in Hillsborough – hundreds of acres toward I-280 and the Crystal Springs watershed; plus large parts of La Honda, Pescadero, Emerald Hills in Redwood City, and the wooded coastside.

If your lot is in one of these zones, the priorities are concrete:

  • Defensible space in the first 30 feet – dead material out, ladder fuels broken up
  • Eucalyptus and conifer limbs and bark litter managed near structures
  • Documentation – increasingly what insurers ask for at renewal

We do this work all season, with our own skid steer and mastication equipment for the bigger slopes.

This is my third time reviewing this company. Once again, I cannot say enough good things about the Company, but Ryan who came out and did the estimate, but the crew and their professionalism. When they left the backyard was actually cleaner than when they got here. These are the reasons I will continue to use them and highly recommend them to anyone who needs tree work if it is for just tightening up or extensive work. They are pros.

We hired Precision Tree Care to deal with several massive trees that were constantly raining leaves onto both our roof and our neighbors'--which meant nonstop gutter clogging and growing concerns about insects. It had become a real maintenance headache. On top of that, a bunch of small trees had started sprouting everywhere from the seeds constantly dropping from these larger trees. The arborists from Precision Tree Care took care of all of it, pruning everything cleanly and restoring order to the space. Their team came in and absolutely saved the day. They cleared things out thoughtfully and professionally, and the difference is huge--our backyard now gets much more natural light, and we're no longer dealing with constant debris buildup in the gutters. The whole process was smooth, and the results exceeded our expectations. Really appreciate the work--thank you, Precision Tree Care!

Ryan and the Precision Tree Care team did a fantastic job pruning all four of my palm trees. From the start, Ryan took the time to walk me through the different service options and explain what each one actually meant. I didn't know much about palm pruning going in, and he was genuinely patient and thorough in helping me understand what my trees needed. The estimate was professional and straightforward, and he provided several options for me to consider. On the day of the job, Ryan and the crew showed up on time, worked efficiently, and wrapped everything up faster than I expected. Smooth from start to finish. Highly recommend.

Quote for small job which required coordination with our neighbors to either get on their property or trim their tree that was encroaching on structures on our property. Ryan put us at ease from the start treating us with respect and addressing all our questions with direct and knowledgeable answers. Overall a very professional, direct, respectful and trustworthy business owner with a skillful and quick crew. He came on the day of work as well to check that everything was done according to our agreement. Did not expect that on such a small job. Thank you, we will be repeat customers! Hope this review helps you get more business!

Just had Precision out to care for and trim a few heritage live oaks, one that was on the sick side. They did a fantastic job. The team are like artists, and the resulting canopy looks beautiful and also balances a tree that needed some care. The team was also very responsive, and great to work with on the site.

Although I decided to use a different tree service company because that company was able to work on replacing our existing irrigation, I have no doubt that Precision Tree Care would have done a thorough job. I met with Ryan, their arborist, and he was extremely knowledgeable and helpful. Ryan offered some unsolicited advice that I could do on my own to care for my plants and I really appreciated them. He also offered a very competitive estimate. I will definitely keep Precision Tree Care in mind for future tree work.

They were prompt in replying, and the quoting process. Worked with us to update the quote quickly and find a date that worked for us. We had some time restrictions given the school traffic on our street. The team came earlier and finished the job very quickly and efficiently. They trimmed the trees to our satisfaction, would definitely use them again. Their quoted price was also ~30% less then another quote I got from another company.

Trust me on this, use this fine company for your tree needs.Ryan ,the owner is an arborist who definitely knows how trees grow, fail etc etc. His stellar crew just took some huge limbs off a very large willow at my home today.Crew so incredibly skilled with safety a clear priority. Tree looks so much better and is safer as if a limb fell ,it could cause great harm . They took extra care not to step on or drop anything in newly refreshed flower beds which pleased me also. Thank you Ryan and also Leo and his team.

Outstanding company ! From start to finish. Starting with our estimate, it was very thorough and for the extensive work to be done surprisingly affordable. We have several very large oak trees in our backyard growing on a steep hill, with the rains last year and the expected rains this year we needed to trim the trees back. Once we signed the proposal we were given a start date. The owner and the foreman came out the day before to go over the job , figuring what needed to be cut and how so the trees look natural while asking for our input and to explain what will happen the next day. The next morning the crew came out and quickly went to work, trimming back all the overgrown trees but keeping in tact the natural shape and future growth in mind. Once the job was done our yard was cleaned immaculately!!

We have a number of large cypress trees in our yard that needed care. After soliciting quotes from four competitors, we settled on Precision Tree Care for trimming of four trees and removal of two. They were neither the most nor least expensive, but throughout the quote process Ryan and Patti provided the most professional service of the companies we contacted. That efficiency and professionalism extended into scheduling and executing the job. Ryan, Patti and the crew completed the work very much to our satisfaction. A wonderful experience! Why Fire Prevention Requires a Certified Arborist

Effective fire prevention is not simply cutting everything back — it requires understanding tree biology, fire behavior, and the specific conditions of San Mateo County’s coastal and inland landscapes. Removing the wrong vegetation, or doing so incorrectly, can actually increase fire risk or damage healthy trees that provide genuine protection.

At Precision Tree Care Inc., every fire prevention job is overseen by an ISA Certified Arborist who understands how fire spreads through mixed vegetation — and how to interrupt that path strategically.

  • ISA Certified Arborist on every job (#WE-12520A) – not just a crew with a chainsaw. We assess your property’s specific fire profile before any work begins.
  • We identify high-risk species – eucalyptus, Monterey cypress, and acacia are common in San Mateo and are among the most fire-prone plants on the Peninsula.
  • Proper vertical and horizontal separation – we don’t just thin at ground level. We remove ladder fuels so ground fire can’t climb into your tree canopy.
  • Compliant with Cal Fire and San Mateo County regulations – we document our work so your property passes inspection.
  • Full debris removal included – all cut material is hauled off-site. We never leave slash piles that become next season’s fuel.
  • Transparent pricing – written estimates before any work begins. No surprise charges for hauling or disposal.

Defensible Space & Vegetation Management in San Mateo County

San Mateo County includes a diverse mix of terrain – from flat bayside neighborhoods to steep, wooded hillsides and canyon corridors that connect directly to open space preserves. Properties near these wildland-urban interface zones face the highest fire risk, and are subject to mandatory defensible space requirements enforced by Cal Fire and local fire agencies.

  • Dead tree and branch removal – eliminating standing dead wood and broken limbs that ignite easily
  • Ladder fuel removal – pruning low branches to a minimum of 6–10 feet above grade to prevent ground fires from climbing into canopies
  • Brush clearance – removing dense chaparral, dry grasses, and invasive species within Zone 1 and Zone 2
  • Tree spacing and thinning – creating horizontal separation to prevent fire from spreading crown to crown
  • Stump grinding – removing stumps that can smolder for days and reignite
  • Slope-adjusted clearance – steeper properties require additional setbacks, calculated and implemented per Cal Fire standards

We serve properties throughout San Mateo – from residential lots in the Highlands and Sugarloaf neighborhoods to hillside estates in Hillsborough, Belmont, and San Carlos.

Hazardous Tree Removal & Fire Fuel Reduction Across the Peninsula

Sometimes fire prevention requires removing trees entirely — especially those that are dead, dying, heavily leaning, or growing in locations that make them an unacceptable fire risk. This is particularly common with eucalyptus groves and overgrown cypress stands that are prevalent in San Mateo’s older residential neighborhoods.

Our hazardous tree removal team handles the full scope: safe sectional removal, crane-assisted work when needed, stump grinding, and complete debris hauling. We protect your surrounding landscape and structures throughout the process.

Beyond individual trees, we also assist property owners with large-scale fuel reduction projects — clearing overgrown hillside vegetation, managing brush encroachment from adjacent open space, and rehabilitating neglected parcels to meet current fire code standards. If your property has received a notice from your local fire department or insurance carrier requiring vegetation clearance, our team can assess and complete the work to bring you into compliance.

We serve all of San Mateo and surrounding communities: Belmont, Burlingame, Hillsborough, San Carlos, Foster City, Millbrae, Redwood City, Menlo Park, and beyond.
