Stump Grinding & Removal in San Francisco Peninsula

After a tree is removed, an unsightly stump is often left behind – posing a safety hazard, attracting pests, and interrupting your landscape’s visual appeal. At Precision Tree Care Inc., we offer expert stump grinding and stump removal services to help restore your property to a clean, level, and usable space.

Stump grinding is a fast, cost-effective method that uses specialized machinery to grind the stump and visible roots into small wood chips or mulch. This technique grinds the stump down to several inches below ground level, allowing you to cover the area with soil or sod for a seamless look. Stump removal is a more intensive process that involves digging out the entire stump, including the root ball, which can sometimes be several feet deep and wide depending on the tree. This leaves a larger hole but ensures that no roots remain that could interfere with replanting or construction.

If you’re looking for a fast and efficient solution with minimal impact on your yard, stump grinding may be the best choice. However, if you’re planning new landscaping or construction, stump removal provides a clean slate for future projects. Not sure which service you need? Our experienced team can assess your property and help you choose the most effective solution based on your goals and budget.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between stump grinding and stump removal?2026-07-16T21:58:01+00:00

Stump grinding uses specialized equipment to grind the stump down below ground level, leaving the roots to decompose naturally. Stump removal involves pulling out the entire stump and root system, which is more invasive but clears the area completely. Grinding is faster and works well for most residential situations. Removal is the better choice when you’re planning construction, significant hardscape, or replanting directly in the same spot.

The quick decision rule: choose grinding in nearly every landscaping situation – cheaper, faster, minimal disturbance. Choose full removal only when you are building, paving, or laying a foundation over the exact spot, because construction cannot sit on decomposing roots.

How deep do you grind a stump?2026-03-26T15:07:28+00:00

Most stumps are ground 6 to 12 inches below ground level, depending on the location and future use of the area. That depth is sufficient for lawn restoration or general landscaping. Deeper grinding – 16 inches or more – is recommended if you plan to replant a new tree, lay hardscape, or build over the site. We discuss the right depth with you before any work begins based on your plans for the area.

Do you offer stump grinding and stump removal?2026-07-21T17:54:50+00:00

Yes – stump grinding is one of our most requested services. We use professional-grade stump grinders to remove stumps below ground level, eliminating tripping hazards and preventing regrowth. We serve residential and commercial properties of any size across San Mateo County. Ask about adding stump grinding to your tree removal quote for a bundled discount.

Two details worth asking any provider: how deep they grind (we go below grade so the area can be replanted or re-sodded) and whether backfill and cleanup are included. Both are standard in our price – the ground is level and usable when we leave.

Will a tree stump grow back after grinding?2026-07-21T17:54:52+00:00

For most Peninsula species – pines, cypress, redwoods, most oaks – no. Grinding removes the stump 6 to 12 inches below grade and destroys the growth point. The roots left in the ground decompose naturally on their own; full decomposition takes roughly 5 to 10 years depending on species and moisture, and the soil above may settle an inch or two – top it up after the first winter.

The exceptions are vigorous re-sprouters: willows, poplars, some acacias, and blue gum eucalyptus, which can send up shoots from the root collar for years. For those species we grind deeper, remove more of the root flare, and can treat regrowth if it appears.

Grinding is faster and cheaper than full stump removal and right for nearly all situations; full excavation matters mainly if you are building, repaving, or replanting over the spot. Stump grinding is discounted when bundled with tree removal, and backfill plus cleanup are included.

Can you grind stumps in difficult locations – near fences, walls, or on slopes?2026-07-16T21:50:46+00:00

Yes – this comes up regularly on the Peninsula. Properties in Pacifica, Montara, Hillsborough, and Belmont frequently have stumps in sloped or confined situations near retaining walls, fences, or structures. We assess every site before starting and select equipment that can reach the stump safely without damaging the surrounding property. Compact grinders fit through standard gate openings and can navigate situations where larger equipment would cause more damage than it solves.

Where a stump sits within a foot of a wall or foundation, we grind at an angle and finish close work by hand – slower, but it protects the structure and avoids a repair bill that would dwarf the grinding cost.

How much does stump grinding cost in San Mateo County?2026-07-16T21:50:47+00:00

Cost depends on stump diameter, required grinding depth, site accessibility, and the number of stumps done in the same visit. Multiple stumps ground in one appointment reduce the overall cost per stump significantly compared to separate visits. We provide free on-site estimates with written pricing before any work begins. Call (650) 355-1277 to schedule.

Measuring tip before you compare quotes: stump diameter is taken at the widest point including the root flare, so a “20 inch” stump is often 30 inches at ground level. Surface roots that need chasing add time, and multiple stumps in one visit always beat separate appointments on price.

Do you offer free wood chips?2026-07-21T19:23:52+00:00

Yes. Fresh wood chips from our daily work are available free on request – and stump grinding produces the same mulch-like chips, which you can keep or have us haul away at no extra charge, your choice at estimate time. Arborist chips are excellent mulch: a 3 to 4 inch layer suppresses weeds and holds soil moisture through the dry season.

Two tips if you keep them: let fresh grindings cool and age a few weeks before spreading, and keep mulch a few inches back from trunks, stems, and the foundation line. Availability depends on where our crews are chipping in a given week – ask when you book work or request a load through our contact form.

Do tree stumps and dead trees attract termites?2026-07-21T19:23:50+00:00

Yes – and it is one of the most practical reasons not to leave them. Stumps and dead wood are standing food for subterranean termites and nesting habitat for carpenter ants. A colony established in a stump 20 feet from your house is a short foraging run from your framing, deck posts, and fence lines.

The risk hierarchy worth knowing: a dead tree or stump touching or near the structure is the priority; one at the back of a large lot is a smaller concern. Grinding removes the food source below grade, and the ground-out chips do not attract colonies the way solid wood does. If you have an old stump near the foundation, grinding it out is inexpensive insurance – and if we find active insect damage in a standing tree, we will tell you before it becomes a structural conversation.

This is my third time reviewing this company. Once again, I cannot say enough good things about the Company, but Ryan who came out and did the estimate, but the crew and their professionalism. When they left the backyard was actually cleaner than when they got here. These are the reasons I will continue to use them and highly recommend them to anyone who needs tree work if it is for just tightening up or extensive work. They are pros.

We hired Precision Tree Care to deal with several massive trees that were constantly raining leaves onto both our roof and our neighbors'--which meant nonstop gutter clogging and growing concerns about insects. It had become a real maintenance headache. On top of that, a bunch of small trees had started sprouting everywhere from the seeds constantly dropping from these larger trees. The arborists from Precision Tree Care took care of all of it, pruning everything cleanly and restoring order to the space. Their team came in and absolutely saved the day. They cleared things out thoughtfully and professionally, and the difference is huge--our backyard now gets much more natural light, and we're no longer dealing with constant debris buildup in the gutters. The whole process was smooth, and the results exceeded our expectations. Really appreciate the work--thank you, Precision Tree Care!

Ryan and the Precision Tree Care team did a fantastic job pruning all four of my palm trees. From the start, Ryan took the time to walk me through the different service options and explain what each one actually meant. I didn't know much about palm pruning going in, and he was genuinely patient and thorough in helping me understand what my trees needed. The estimate was professional and straightforward, and he provided several options for me to consider. On the day of the job, Ryan and the crew showed up on time, worked efficiently, and wrapped everything up faster than I expected. Smooth from start to finish. Highly recommend.

Quote for small job which required coordination with our neighbors to either get on their property or trim their tree that was encroaching on structures on our property. Ryan put us at ease from the start treating us with respect and addressing all our questions with direct and knowledgeable answers. Overall a very professional, direct, respectful and trustworthy business owner with a skillful and quick crew. He came on the day of work as well to check that everything was done according to our agreement. Did not expect that on such a small job. Thank you, we will be repeat customers! Hope this review helps you get more business!

Just had Precision out to care for and trim a few heritage live oaks, one that was on the sick side. They did a fantastic job. The team are like artists, and the resulting canopy looks beautiful and also balances a tree that needed some care. The team was also very responsive, and great to work with on the site.

Although I decided to use a different tree service company because that company was able to work on replacing our existing irrigation, I have no doubt that Precision Tree Care would have done a thorough job. I met with Ryan, their arborist, and he was extremely knowledgeable and helpful. Ryan offered some unsolicited advice that I could do on my own to care for my plants and I really appreciated them. He also offered a very competitive estimate. I will definitely keep Precision Tree Care in mind for future tree work.

They were prompt in replying, and the quoting process. Worked with us to update the quote quickly and find a date that worked for us. We had some time restrictions given the school traffic on our street. The team came earlier and finished the job very quickly and efficiently. They trimmed the trees to our satisfaction, would definitely use them again. Their quoted price was also ~30% less then another quote I got from another company.

Trust me on this, use this fine company for your tree needs.Ryan ,the owner is an arborist who definitely knows how trees grow, fail etc etc. His stellar crew just took some huge limbs off a very large willow at my home today.Crew so incredibly skilled with safety a clear priority. Tree looks so much better and is safer as if a limb fell ,it could cause great harm . They took extra care not to step on or drop anything in newly refreshed flower beds which pleased me also. Thank you Ryan and also Leo and his team.

Exceptional people, fabulous results! The team arrived an hour early (in whose universe does that happen?) and talked with me about the job and my expectations. They went to work, did a magnificent job and had a wood chipper to dispose of the tree branches. easy to communicate with and I would hire them again. The only complaint I have was the suggestion that lunch was included. Huh?

Highly recommend Ryan and his crew of workers at Precision Tree Care. They just finished trimming three trees for us and we are very pleased with the job. The crew arrived early but did not start working until 8 am so they would not disturb the neighbors. Worked quickly and efficiently and had us approve the final trimming and clean-up before they left. Will definitely use Precision when our trees need to be trimmed again.

Outstanding company ! From start to finish. Starting with our estimate, it was very thorough and for the extensive work to be done surprisingly affordable. We have several very large oak trees in our backyard growing on a steep hill, with the rains last year and the expected rains this year we needed to trim the trees back. Once we signed the proposal we were given a start date. The owner and the foreman came out the day before to go over the job , figuring what needed to be cut and how so the trees look natural while asking for our input and to explain what will happen the next day. The next morning the crew came out and quickly went to work, trimming back all the overgrown trees but keeping in tact the natural shape and future growth in mind. Once the job was done our yard was cleaned immaculately!!

We have a number of large cypress trees in our yard that needed care. After soliciting quotes from four competitors, we settled on Precision Tree Care for trimming of four trees and removal of two. They were neither the most nor least expensive, but throughout the quote process Ryan and Patti provided the most professional service of the companies we contacted. That efficiency and professionalism extended into scheduling and executing the job. Ryan, Patti and the crew completed the work very much to our satisfaction. A wonderful experience! They should be at the top of everyone's list for best tree care service in town!

Why Stump Grinding Requires the Right Equipment and Experience

Not every stump grinding job is the same – and not every contractor has the equipment or experience to handle the full range of situations San Francisco Peninsula properties present. Urban neighborhoods like San Carlos, Belmont, and Millbrae often have stumps surrounded by fencing, hardscape, underground irrigation, and neighboring structures just feet away. Coastal properties in Pacifica or Half Moon Bay may have large-diameter stumps with deep root systems in challenging terrain.

At Precision Tree Care Inc., we bring the right grinder for every job – from compact walk-behind units for tight Peninsula backyards to full-sized commercial grinders for large stumps on open properties. Every job is assessed by our ISA Certified Arborist before work begins.

  • ISA Certified Arborist on every job (#WE-12520A) – we assess root depth, soil conditions, and surrounding infrastructure before grinding begins.
  • Right-sized equipment for every property – compact grinders for tight urban yards, full-sized machines for large stumps and open lots.
  • Underground utility awareness – we call 811 and assess for irrigation lines, gas, and electrical before any grinding work starts.
  • Multiple stumps, one visit – grinding several stumps in a single appointment saves time and reduces the overall cost per stump.
  • Full cleanup included – all chips and debris removed or redistributed per your preference. No extra charge.
  • Transparent pricing – written estimate before work begins. No hidden fees for depth, debris hauling, or access difficulty.

Stump Grinding Across San Francisco Peninsula

We serve residential and commercial properties across San Francisco Peninsula and San Mateo County – including neighborhoods where tight lots, steep grades, and dense landscaping make stump grinding a job that requires real expertise. Whether you have a single ornamental stump in a Belmont backyard or a row of redwood stumps on a Hillsborough estate, our crew handles the job safely and efficiently.

Common situations we handle across the San Francisco Peninsula:

  • Multiple stumps after large-scale tree removal on Peninsula properties
  • Stumps near foundations, fences, retaining walls, or underground utilities
  • Large-diameter stumps from mature oaks, redwoods, and eucalyptus
  • Stumps on sloped terrain in Pacifica, Montara, and hillside communities

After grinding, we can backfill the cavity with topsoil, leaving the area level and ready for lawn seed, sod, new planting, or hardscape. Free wood chips are available upon request for use as garden mulch.

Tree Care Experts

Full Stump Removal and Root Extraction Across the San Francisco Peninsula

For properties where complete root extraction is needed – before new construction, major landscaping, or hardscape installation – we offer full stump removal services. This goes beyond grinding: our team excavates and extracts the entire stump and root ball, leaving the site fully cleared.

Full stump removal is recommended when you plan to pour a foundation, lay a patio or driveway, install an in-ground pool, or plant a new tree directly in the same spot. Root systems from large trees can extend several feet in every direction – leaving them in place can cause problems for new structures and planting over time.

We handle the full process: excavation, root cutting, extraction, backfill, and debris removal. Your property is left clean, level, and ready for whatever comes next. We serve the entire Peninsula – from Pacifica and Daly City to Redwood City, Menlo Park, and beyond.
